Before you pay for a transmission, find out if it is one.

Hard shifts · slipping · solenoids · fluid · rebuilds

01 / FIRST

Most transmission quotes are not transmissions

A slip and a hard shift feel catastrophic from the driver’s seat. Often they are a sensor, a solenoid, or fluid that was never changed. Those are hundreds, not thousands.

Reads a transmission code and quotes a rebuild.

Tests the circuit the code points at, because the code names a circuit, not a part.

Never checks the fluid condition or level.

Looks at color and smell first — burnt fluid and low fluid cause exactly these symptoms.

Replaces the unit because that is the easy sale.

Prices the repair and the replacement, and tells you honestly when a rebuild is genuinely the right call.

01 — DIAGNOSED

Driven, scanned, data-logged

We drive it and log live data rather than guess from a code. A shift that only misbehaves warm, or only under load, is information — and it is the information that decides whether anything comes apart at all.

02 — REPAIRED OR REBUILT

Whichever the evidence supports

If it is a solenoid or a valve body, that is what gets fixed. If it genuinely needs a rebuild, you will have seen why before anyone quotes it.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Another shop quoted me a rebuild. Should I get a second opinion?

Yes, and bring the quote. A slip or a hard shift is often a solenoid, a sensor or fluid rather than the whole unit. Those are hundreds. A rebuild is thousands, and it should be proven before it is sold.

What does a slipping transmission feel like?

Engine revs climb without the vehicle accelerating to match, or a shift that hangs and then bangs in. Either is worth looking at quickly, because driving a slipping transmission usually makes it worse.

Does transmission fluid really need changing?

On most vehicles yes, whatever "lifetime fluid" implies. Burnt or dark fluid causes exactly the symptoms people mistake for a failing unit.

What is converter shudder?

A vibration around light throttle at cruising speed, often described as driving over rumble strips. It is frequently a fluid problem rather than a failed converter, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes.
