01 / THE MACHINE

Both refrigerants, in this building

Vehicles from roughly 2015 onward use R-1234yf. It needs different equipment, so a lot of independent shops quietly send that work to the dealer. We bought the machine instead.

Warm air

It blows warm

Usually a leak. Refrigerant does not get used up — if it is low, it went somewhere, and topping it up without finding that is money out of the window.

Intermittent

It works, then stops

Often a pressure switch, a clutch, or a system icing up. Intermittent faults need the gauges on while it misbehaves.

Odour

It smells

Evaporator or cabin filter. One is cheap, one is a day. Worth knowing which before you commit.

Noise

It is noisy

Compressors usually warn before they let go. Catching it early keeps the debris out of the rest of the system.

01 — READ

Gauges on before anything gets added

High and low side pressures tell us what the system is doing. Charging a system without reading it first is guessing with refrigerant, and it is how a leak becomes an expensive habit.

02 — FIXED AND CHARGED

Leak found, then recharged to spec

The leak gets found and repaired first. Then the system is evacuated and charged by weight, not by feel, because an overcharged system cools worse than a correct one.

Indiana summers are short. Do not spend one of them with the windows down.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Can you service the newer R-1234yf refrigerant?

Yes. We have the machine for R-1234yf as well as R-134a, which means vehicles from roughly 2015 onward do not have to go to the dealer for A/C work.

My A/C just needs a top-up, right?

Refrigerant is not consumed. If the system is low, it leaked, and recharging without finding the leak means paying for the same repair again in a few months. We find it first.

Why does my A/C work sometimes and not others?

Commonly a pressure switch, a compressor clutch, or the system icing up. Intermittent faults need the gauges connected while the fault is happening, which is why we drive them.

How much does A/C repair cost?

The diagnosis is the fixed part; the repair depends entirely on what leaked. A schrader valve and an evaporator are the two ends of a very wide range, so nobody should quote before reading the system.
